Backcountry Ski “School”

Application opens November 25, 2025

Course Description:

Backcountry Ski “School” is an intermediate/advanced class with a focus on building a community of ski partners. This class is intended for advanced skiers and splitboarders in their first few years in the backcountry looking to build partnerships and learn from their peers. Weekday classroom sessions will be at the Saranac Building in downtown Spokane exploring various key topics through group participation and collaboration. Weekend sessions will be primarily group led within a few hours of Spokane using tools discussed in the class.

Weekend classes are not guided trips, but an opportunity to build consistency and comfortability in ski partners while exploring our local areas. The volunteer group leaders for the class are not certified guides or avalanche professionals - it is a "school" with the goal to talk through some key topics and put everyone on a level knowledgebase to hopefully find some ski partners and expand our awesome local ski community.

Students must have strong ski or snowboard ability and fitness suitable for full days in the mountains.

Core learning objectives:

  • Building Ski Community
  • Avalanche Rescue Fundamentals
  • Condition Assessment Experience
  • Trip Planning, Mapping Tools
  • Weather Forecasting Tools

Course Requirements:

Students should be experienced skiers or snowboarders comfortable skiing in ungroomed terrain with some experience using their backcountry gear.

A requirement of this class is to complete a level 1 Avalanche Class, either prior or during the course of the class.

Gear Requirements:

Touring setup is required for the class.

Beacon/Shovel/Probe - It is recommended to purchase and train with your own, however club equipment is available for use during the class.

Radio/walkie talkie is highly recommended.
